A Raisin in the Sun

World Premiere: Monday, February 25 8/7c on ABC

Sean Combs, who reprises the role of Walter Lee, Jr. which brought him acclaim, stars in the highly anticipated, special three-hour television movie adaptation from Sony Pictures Television of "A Raisin in the Sun," along with the cast of the award-winning Broadway revival who recreate their roles for the new film, including Emmy and Tony Award winner Phylicia Rashad, four-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald, Tony Award nominee Sanaa Lathan, plus "ER" star John Stamos. Based on Lorraine Hansberry's play that inspired a generation.

"A Raisin in the Sun" tells the story of a family living and struggling on Chicago's South Side in the 1950s. A fiercely moving portrait of people whose hopes and dreams are constantly deferred, Ms. Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun" was the first play written by an African American woman to be produced on Broadway. It premiered in 1959 with a cast that included Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil, Diana Sands, Ruby Dee and Louis Gossett Jr. The critically acclaimed work was honored with the 1959 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for best American play. A Columbia Pictures feature with the same cast followed in 1961. The classic, still-relevant story now will be showcased in this totally new television movie adaptation.

NATIONAL BROADCAST TONIGHT!

Prince Among Slaves, a new documentary by Unity Productions Foundation, will air nationwide on PBS on Monday, February 4, 2008, at 10 PM (check local listings at www.pbs.org).

The one-hour film, narrated by Mos Def, tells the tale of a little known African American hero, who despite enduring unimaginable indignities, managed to survive his long fall from royalty with character and integrity intact. In 1828, Abdul Rahman Ibrahima Sori, an African prince enslaved for forty years in the American South, set out across the country to share his life story in an attempt to secure his family’s freedom from slavery.

Little did he know that nearly two hundred years later, his remarkable journey full of dramatic circumstances and immeasurable odds would be pieced together to become a source of inspiration for millions of people.

By highlighting this amazing historical period, Prince Among Slaves also attempts to create discussion and awareness about slavery, race relations, societies of Africa, and the lessons of American history.

Black Heritage Stamp 2008

With the 31st stamp in its Black Heritage series, the U.S. Postal Service honors Charles W. Chesnutt (1858–1932), an African American author and political activist best known for novels and short stories exploring racism and other social themes. He was a pioneering writer recognized today as a major innovator and singular voice among turn–of–the–century literary realists. In novels such as The Marrow of Tradition and short stories such as those collected in The Conjure Woman he probed the color line in American life.

Art director Howard Paine wanted a stamp that emphasized Chesnutt’s intelligence and dignity; the portrait painted by stamp artist Kazuhiko Sano was based on a 1908 photograph from the collection of Fisk University.

Finding the Repurpose of it All

When we finalized our theme for this year’s Black History Month exhibit, I knew right away what I wanted to center an exhibit piece around, but I wasn’t sure how to display the idea. After hearing my thoughts, Teresa came up with a wonderful way to present the idea and it was just a matter of pulling together the different materials to realize our exhibit piece.

One of the materials we are using for our piece is foam core board that we’re repurposing. The long forgotten 2’ x 2’ squares that I found were perfect for our exhibit piece, but we had to strip the boards of their original purpose; display panels.

So, what will the repurposed foam core boards turn into? You’ll have to wait until next week…but below is a hint.

-Jennifer

Just stripping away!
